ClinConnect Summary
This trial is testing whether a structured Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program can reduce complications after surgery for sarcoma (cancers of soft tissue or bone). In this study, 300 patients are planned: the first 150 receive the usual standard care, and the next 150 are treated with the full ERAS protocol, which includes steps before, during, and after surgery to prepare the patient and support quicker recovery. The main question is whether early complications within 30 days after surgery are lower with ERAS. The study also looks at longer-term issues (30 days to 1 year), how long patients stay in the hospital, wound healing, death, and patients’ own view of their health and daily life one year after surgery.
Who can participate: people aged 15 or older with sarcoma of the arms, legs, or trunk who are planned for sarcoma surgery at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. To join, you must meet the criteria and agree to participate; those not meeting criteria, who do not want to join, or who are not Swedish citizens are not eligible. Participants may have pre-surgery tests to check for anemia and nutrition, and may receive iron, vitamin B12, or folate before surgery if eligible. During surgery, there may be more use of regional anesthesia and techniques to reduce bleeding, and after surgery you’ll get a nutritional drink and encouragement to move early to help recovery. The study is currently enrolling and aims to include up to 300 patients, with results expected after 2028. The project is run by Region Stockholm with Karolinska Institutet as a partner.
