BACKGROUND:

The Multiple Risk Factor Intervention Trial (MRFIT) revealed an unexpected subgroup finding: an association between diuretic therapy (especially with hydrochlorothiazide) and an increased rate of sudden death in hypertensive men with left ventricular hypertrophy and other ECG abnormalities.
