ClinConnect Summary

**Summary of the Circulating Markers for Ischemic Heart Disease Clinical Trial**

This clinical trial is investigating whether two specific proteins in the blood increase during a heart attack (also known as myocardial infarction) and whether higher levels of these proteins are linked to the development of heart failure. Heart attacks can damage the heart muscle, which may cause these proteins to be released into the bloodstream. Researchers hope that by measuring these protein levels, they can learn more about heart health and potentially identify individuals at risk for heart failure.

To participate in this study, you must be at least 18 years old and have experienced a heart attack, confirmed by certain tests. You could also be eligible if you have heart failure symptoms, or you may be part of a control group if you are a man over 60 without a history of heart disease. Participants will provide blood samples, and the study aims to better understand how these proteins relate to heart problems. It’s important to note that individuals who have had recent surgeries or cannot give consent will not be included in the study. This research could help improve future treatments and care for heart disease.

Eligibility criteria

  • Inclusion Criteria:
  • men and women, 18 years of age and over with acute myocardial infarction (determined by positive cardiac markers -CKMB/ troponin) with or without heart failure (dyspnea, rales, edema, elevated jugular venous pressure, ascites).
  • Heart failure can be diagnosed using imaging evidence such as dilated heart, poor contractile function or echocardiographic Doppler evidence of diastolic dysfunction or elevated right- or left-sided filling pressures
  • A control group of male subjects age 60 and older without history of MI or heart disease
  • Exclusion Criteria:
  • Subjects unable to give consent
  • Subjects who have undergone cardiac or non-cardiac surgery in the 3 months prior to enrollment
