ClinConnect Summary
This is an observational, long-term study at Massachusetts General Hospital that follows adults after complex arm or upper-extremity injuries or related bone/joint conditions to understand how recovery progresses over time. Researchers will track outcomes for about five years, focusing on how well the joints move (range of motion) and how the arm works in daily life, as well as worries like pain and mood. The study is designed to observe what happens in real life, not test a new treatment.
Who can participate: adults 18 and older of any sex who have a history of a complex arm or upper-extremity injury and have already completed their usual care in the Orthopaedic Hand and Upper Extremity Service. Enrollment is by invitation, with about 750 people expected. Participation involves a 60-minute clinic visit (interview, physical exam, and possibly X-rays) or a phone interview if you cannot come to Boston. The study collects patient-reported information on function, pain, and mood over about five years. Results are not yet available, and the study is still enrolling by invitation.
