ClinConnect Summary
The Parkinson's Families Project is a research study aiming to uncover new genes that may cause or increase the risk of Parkinson's Disease and related conditions. Since around 127,000 people in the UK are living with Parkinson's, understanding the genetic factors involved is very important. The researchers are particularly interested in studying families where one person has Parkinson's, especially those who developed symptoms before the age of 45 or have other family members affected by the disease. By examining the genetic information of both affected individuals and their family members, the team hopes to find new insights that could lead to better diagnoses and treatments.
To participate in this study, individuals must be over 16 years old and have a clinical diagnosis of Parkinson's disease or parkinsonism. They should either have a family history of the condition or have developed symptoms at an early age. Participants will be asked to provide their genetic information, which will help researchers learn more about how genetics can influence Parkinson's. It’s important to note that those who cannot give consent will not be eligible to join. Ultimately, this study aims to improve our understanding of Parkinson's and help develop more effective ways to manage the disease.
