ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial, called the Swedish Multicenter Trial of Outpatient Prevention of Leg Clots, is focused on finding better ways to prevent serious blood clots in patients who have injuries like an Achilles tendon rupture or an ankle fracture. When patients have these injuries, they often need to keep their leg immobilized, which can lead to complications such as blood clots, known as venous thromboembolism (VTE). The study will compare the usual treatment of using a plaster cast to a new treatment called intermittent pneumatic compression (IPC) therapy, which helps improve blood flow. The goal is to see if IPC can lower the risk of blood clots and help patients heal better.
To participate in this trial, you must be between the ages of 18 and 79 and have recently suffered an Achilles tendon rupture or an isolated ankle fracture, with treatment starting within 10 days of your injury. Unfortunately, if you have certain medical conditions, like a bleeding disorder, kidney issues, or if you are pregnant, you may not be eligible. If you join the study, you can expect to receive either the standard care with a plaster cast or the IPC therapy, and the researchers will monitor your progress to see how well each treatment works. This trial is currently recruiting participants, so if you think you might be eligible, it could be a great opportunity to help improve treatment for future patients.
