ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying a tool called the Bispectral Index (BIS), which uses a special type of brain wave monitoring called electroencephalography (EEG). The goal is to see if BIS can help detect a condition known as dialysis disequilibrium syndrome (DDS) in patients who are starting hemodialysis for the first time. DDS can cause symptoms like confusion or agitation during dialysis, and current methods to identify it rely on observing the patient. The researchers want to find out if BIS can provide a more accurate way to recognize this condition.
To participate in the trial, you need to be starting hemodialysis for the first time. Unfortunately, if you are taking sedative or psychiatric medications, or if you have certain neurological conditions like severe confusion, previous strokes, or dementia, you won't be eligible. If you join, you'll be monitored using the BIS system during your dialysis sessions, which will help the researchers learn more about how to better detect DDS in the future. This study aims to enhance the safety and experience of patients undergoing dialysis.
