ClinConnect Summary
The Gastric Ultrasound for Estimation of the Aspiration Risk Study is a research project aimed at understanding how well current guidelines on eating and drinking before surgery work for patients who may have food or drink lingering in their stomach longer than usual. This is important because it helps prevent a serious complication called aspiration, where stomach contents could enter the lungs during anesthesia. The study is currently looking for volunteers who are planning to have certain types of procedures, like upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopies or surgeries for trauma injuries, and will need an oral-gastric tube placed during their treatment.
To participate, you need to be at least 18 years old and agree to have an ultrasound exam, which is a painless test that uses sound waves to create images of your stomach. However, if you are pregnant, have had gastric bypass surgery, or if placing an oral-gastric tube isn’t appropriate for you, you won’t be eligible to join. If you choose to participate, you'll help researchers learn more about safe practices for managing anesthesia and improving patient care during surgeries.
