ClinConnect Summary
This study, called PURE (Postpartum Urinary Retention With Essential Oils), is checking whether peppermint oil vapor can help new moms who have trouble emptying their bladder after birth. It’s for adult women (18 and older) who recently delivered at Mount Carmel Health System and cannot urinate on their own within 6 hours after vaginal delivery or after catheter use/removal for a cesarean. Participants are randomly assigned to one of two groups in a double-blind setup, meaning neither the patient nor the care team knows which vapor is being used.
If you participate, you’ll receive 2 ml of either peppermint oil vapor or mineral oil vapor placed in a toilet urine collection hat and then sit on the toilet as usual; the perineal skin only contacts the vapor, not the oil directly. Researchers will measure how quickly you can void (urinate) and how much urine you produce within 6 hours, along with a short question about your satisfaction. The main goal is spontaneous voiding within 10 minutes after the intervention and at least 150 ml of urine. The trial is currently enrolling at Mount Carmel in Columbus, Ohio, and is expected to finish around December 2025.
