ClinConnect Summary
The Nanshan Elderly Cohort Study (NECS) is a research project that aims to understand how nutrition and other factors affect chronic diseases in older adults, such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Researchers will be looking at around 10,000 to 20,000 healthy individuals aged 65 and older who have lived in Nanshan, Shenzhen, for at least five years. They will recruit participants between 2018 and 2019 and follow them for many years to gather important health information.
If you or a family member are 65 or older, have lived in Nanshan for at least five years, and are generally healthy, you may qualify to participate. Those who have serious health conditions like diabetes, heart failure, or cancer, as well as those on special diets or with disabilities, will not be eligible. Participants can expect to attend check-ups every three years, where they will answer questions about their health, undergo physical exams, and have tests done on blood, urine, and even stool samples. This study will help researchers learn more about the health of older adults and how to improve their well-being.
