ClinConnect Summary
This is an observational study called “Glans Size in Hypospadias Compared to Normal.” Researchers will compare glans size (the head of the penis) and overall penis length between boys with hypospadias and boys without hypospadias who are having other urologic surgery. They will measure these dimensions in the clinic before surgery and again during the operation, using three measurements of the glans and overall length. Participants will be followed for up to two years to help create growth curves, and the study will look at whether giving testosterone before surgery (when it’s part of standard care) affects growth. The main question is whether there is a difference in glans size between the two groups at about six months.
About 90 male participants are planned, with 45 in each group. Most will be children, but older ages are also eligible. Inclusion means undergoing hypospadias repair (study group) or undergoing other male urologic surgeries (control group); exclusions include other penile problems or procedures beyond what the study measures. Participants will have measurements in the clinic and again in the operating room, with age, weight, and ethnicity recorded, and any preoperative testosterone documented. The study is led by Albany Medical College in Albany, New York, with Barry Kogan, MD, as the principal investigator. It is currently enrolling by invitation and is expected to complete around December 2025.
