ClinConnect Summary
The International Low Anterior Resection Score Evaluation trial is studying how bowel function changes in patients who undergo surgery for rectal cancer. Specifically, it looks at bowel function before surgery and again one year later, using a tool called the LARS score. This score helps to understand any issues patients may experience, like difficulty controlling bowel movements or having frequent urges to go to the bathroom. By comparing these scores, researchers want to see how surgery affects bowel function and how it compares to what is considered normal.
To participate in this trial, you need to be 18 years or older and planning to have surgery for rectal cancer with the goal of curing it. This includes various types of surgeries such as laparoscopic or robotic procedures. However, if you are undergoing surgery just for diagnosis, are receiving palliative care (treatment to relieve symptoms but not cure the disease), or have other specific conditions like dementia, you would not be eligible. If you join the study, you can expect to fill out questionnaires about your bowel function before your surgery and again one year later, helping to provide important information that could improve care for future patients.
