ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is exploring whether an antibiotic called phenoxymethylpenicillin helps patients with a sore throat who test negative for a common bacteria known as group A streptococcus (GAS). The study focuses on adults aged 15 and older who have certain symptoms, such as a fever and swollen lymph nodes, but do not have GAS. The goal is to see if taking the antibiotic for 10 days shortens the duration of their sore throat, reduces the intensity of their symptoms, and decreases the number of days they need to take off from work or school.
To be eligible for the trial, participants must have a specific set of symptoms (known as a Centor score of 3-4), have been experiencing their sore throat for less than 8 days, and have tested negative for GAS. Those who are currently on antibiotics or have certain allergies will not be included. Participants will be randomly assigned to either receive the antibiotic or no treatment at all. Throughout the study, they will keep a diary to track their symptoms and will have follow-up visits to assess their recovery. This trial aims to better understand the role of different bacteria in causing sore throats and improve treatment options for patients.
