ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is exploring how the positions of the jaw and teeth affect speech in patients who are undergoing jaw surgery. Many patients with jaw issues, like open bites or underbites, struggle with speaking clearly, and the researchers want to understand why. They believe that fixing these jaw problems through surgery can help improve speech. To study this, participants will have their speech recorded and their tongue movements monitored before and after their surgeries to see what changes occur.
To be eligible for this study, participants need to be between the ages of 15 and 40 and scheduled for jaw surgery at UNC due to specific dental issues like an open bite or a significant underbite. However, individuals with hearing loss, certain speech patterns, or prior significant jaw surgeries may not qualify. If you decide to participate, you can expect to be part of an important investigation that could help improve speech outcomes for many people facing similar challenges.
