Video Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery Subxiphoid Approach

ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is comparing two different surgical methods for removing the thymus gland, which is important for patients with conditions like thymoma (a type of tumor) and myasthenia gravis (a disease that causes muscle weakness). The two techniques being studied are the traditional video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and a newer method that involves making an incision below the xiphoid process (the bottom part of the breastbone). The goal is to see which method is more effective and has fewer complications.

To participate in this trial, patients should have a thymoma or generalized myasthenia gravis that hasn’t responded well to other treatments, and they need to be in good overall health, especially with their heart and lungs. Unfortunately, those who cannot handle the surgery due to heart or lung issues or have a specific type of myasthenia gravis (MuSK positive) would not be eligible. If you join this trial, you can expect to receive one of the two surgical treatments and help researchers learn more about the best ways to perform thymectomy surgeries.
