ClinConnect Summary

The PENGUIN trial is a research study looking at how certain treatments before and during major abdominal surgery can affect the risk of serious infections like pneumonia and surgical site infections. This study will involve patients from low and middle-income countries, who will be randomly assigned to one of four groups. Some will use a special mouthwash called chlorhexidine before surgery, while others will not. Additionally, the amount of oxygen they receive during surgery will vary between groups. The goal is to see which combination helps reduce the chances of infections after surgery.

To participate in this trial, patients must be at least 10 years old and scheduled for an elective or emergency abdominal surgery that requires a significant incision (at least 5 cm long). Patients who are allergic to chlorhexidine, those undergoing certain types of surgery like caesarean sections, or those who cannot be contacted after leaving the hospital are not eligible. Participants will need to give their consent, which can be done by signing a form or using a fingerprint. This study is currently recruiting, and it aims to improve care and outcomes for patients undergoing high-risk surgeries.
