ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is exploring a new way to help patients stay active while they are in the hospital. Researchers believe that being more mobile can lead to better health outcomes for patients with conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. In this study, patients will wear a device that tracks their physical activity and use their smartphones to receive and send text messages about their daily movement. Some participants will also engage in a fun, game-like approach to encourage them to be more active. After they leave the hospital, researchers will look at how often patients need additional medical care and how well they are doing 30 days later.
To be eligible for this trial, you must be at least 50 years old and currently admitted to a medicine or cardiology floor in the hospital. You should be able to move independently to some degree, as shown by specific scoring criteria. Unfortunately, if you cannot give consent, do not have access to a smartphone, or have certain health conditions, you won't be able to participate. The study is not yet recruiting participants, but it aims to help improve the recovery process for patients by encouraging movement during their hospital stay.

Eligibility criteria
- Inclusion Criteria:
- • Admitted to a medicine or cardiology floor in the hospital
- • Age 50 years or older
- • Have an AMPAC (mobility scale) score of greater than or equal to 21 or a Braden mobility sub-scale score of 4.
- Exclusion Criteria:
- • Inability to provide informed consent
- • Does not have daily access to a smartphone compatible with the wearable device and not willing to use a device that the study team can provide
- • Inpatient AMPAC score of less than 21 or a Braden mobility sub-scale score less than 4 indicating that independent physical activity may not be appropriate for the patient
- • Are already enrolled in another physical activity study
- • Any conditions that would prohibit participation in an inpatient physical activity program (at the discretion of attending physician or nurse caring for the patient in the hospital). To minimize the risk of contamination across study arms, we will only approach one patient per hospital room in shared rooms
