ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial, called the Sun-safe Habits Intervention and Education (SHINE) study, is looking to improve how high school students protect themselves from the sun and reduce their tanning practices. The goal is to see if a special program called SHINE can help students use more sun protection, like sunscreen and hats, compared to regular education about sun safety. The study will involve about 30 high schools in Utah, where half of the schools will participate in the SHINE program and the other half will receive standard lessons. Students will have some follow-up assessments to see how well the program worked at different times after the lessons.
To be part of this trial, students need to be in high school (grades 9-12) and attending school in Utah. Unfortunately, students who do not speak English or have certain developmental delays won’t be able to join. If you participate, you can expect to attend two classroom sessions about sun safety, and then researchers will check in with you to see how your sun protection habits have changed over the following months and year. This study aims to help keep teenagers safe from skin cancer by promoting better sun protection habits.
