ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying the effects of two types of anesthesia—propofol (given through an IV) and sevoflurane (inhaled)—on children undergoing surgery to remove tumors. The goal is to see how these different anesthesia methods might affect the body's response to cancer, including factors like immune response and the presence of cancer cells in the blood. The researchers want to find out if one method is better than the other in helping children recover and avoid cancer recurrence in the years following their surgery.
To participate in this trial, children between the ages of 6 months and 17 years who are undergoing surgery for a solid tumor at the Hong Kong Children's Hospital may be eligible. They should be healthy enough for surgery and weigh more than 5 kilograms. During the study, participants will be randomly assigned to receive either propofol or sevoflurane anesthesia, and their health will be monitored with blood tests before, during, and after the surgery. The children will be followed for up to 3 years to track their recovery and any signs of the tumor coming back. This trial is important because it seeks to improve how we manage anesthesia in pediatric cancer surgery, potentially leading to better outcomes for young patients.
