ClinConnect Summary
The Lung B.A.S.E.S. 4 Life trial is studying the use of low-dose CT scans to screen for lung cancer in younger adults aged 40 to 54 who have a significant smoking history. Previous studies have shown that these scans can help detect lung cancer early and improve survival rates, but they usually focus on people aged 55 and older. This trial aims to see if starting screenings earlier can benefit those at high risk, particularly in North and South Carolina, where many people have a strong history of smoking.
To participate in this study, individuals must be between 40 and 54 years old, have a history of smoking equivalent to 30 pack years (that’s the number of packs smoked per day multiplied by the number of years smoked), and either still smoke or have quit within the last 15 years. Participants will need to understand the study procedures and provide consent to share their health information. It’s important to note that those with a recent diagnosis of lung cancer, certain medical conditions that would prevent a CT scan, or who are pregnant cannot join the trial. If eligible, participants can expect to undergo low-dose CT scans to help researchers learn more about lung cancer screening in younger adults.
