ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying how beta-lactam antibiotics, like ampicillin or penicillin, work in patients with infective endocarditis, a serious infection of the heart valves. The researchers want to understand how different factors, such as a patient's age, body weight, and kidney function, can affect the levels of these antibiotics in the body. This is important because if the drug levels are too low, the treatment might not work, and if they're too high, it could cause side effects. By collecting blood samples from 150 patients at four hospitals in Sweden, the team aims to create a model that helps predict the best antibiotic doses for individual patients.
Eligible participants for this trial are adults aged 18 and older who have been diagnosed with infective endocarditis and are receiving intravenous treatment with one of the study antibiotics. Patients will need to give their consent to join the study. During the trial, participants can expect to have blood samples taken at multiple times throughout their treatment to gather important information about how the antibiotics are working for them. This research could help improve antibiotic dosing for future patients, ensuring they receive the right amount of medication to effectively fight their infection.
