Surgical Site Infection Mechanical Bowel Preparation Randomized Controlled Trial

ClinConnect Summary

The Mechanical Bowel Prep Randomized Study is a clinical trial aimed at improving the care of patients undergoing colon surgery. The main focus of the study is to find out if using a combination of intravenous antibiotics and oral antibiotics (IVA+OA) is just as effective as using those antibiotics along with a mechanical bowel preparation (IVA+MBP+OA) in reducing the risk of surgical site infections (SSI). These infections are common after colon surgery and can lead to longer recovery times and higher healthcare costs, so it's important to find the best way to prepare patients for surgery.

To participate in this trial, you need to be over 18 years old and scheduled for elective colon surgery, whether for a non-cancerous condition or cancer. You also need to be able to provide informed consent. However, if you have a severe allergy to certain antibiotics, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have serious kidney issues, you won't be eligible for this study. If you join the trial, you'll be randomly assigned to one of the two groups (IVA+OA or IVA+MBP+OA) and monitored to see how well the treatment works in preventing infections. This study could help make surgery safer and easier for future patients.
