ClinConnect Summary
The PREVENT Trial is studying a new program designed to help prevent hip fractures in older adults living in long-term care homes. Hip fractures are a serious concern for these residents, as they can lead to hospitalization, loss of independence, and even death. The PREVENT program uses a special tool to identify residents who are at high risk for fractures due to conditions like osteoporosis. It then provides training and resources to the healthcare staff, including doctors and nurses, to ensure they have the best strategies to support residents and their families in making treatment decisions. The trial will compare homes using this program with those receiving standard care to see if it effectively reduces the number of hip fractures.
To participate in the trial, long-term care homes in Ontario and Alberta with at least 70 residents can take part. However, residents who are very ill, in hospice care, or expected to stay for less than 90 days will not be eligible. For those who participate, the healthcare teams will learn new ways to help prevent falls and fractures, ultimately aiming to improve the health and safety of the residents. This trial is currently recruiting participants and hopes to make a significant impact on the quality of life for older adults in care.
