ClinConnect Summary
The AlcoTail clinical trial is studying how to help hospital patients who struggle with harmful alcohol use and the misuse of certain medications. This research is important because drinking too much alcohol can seriously affect a person's health, and the Norwegian Ministry of Health wants to find better ways to identify and support these patients. The study will involve two groups of patients: about 2,500 patients will be observed before any new support measures are put in place, and another 2,500 will be looked at after these measures are introduced. The goal is to see whether these tailored interventions can effectively help patients reduce their alcohol and medicine use.
To be eligible for this trial, patients need to be admitted to medical wards in the hospital. However, those who cannot understand Norwegian or have significant cognitive or mental challenges, as well as those whose main reason for being in the hospital is an injury or planned surgery, will not be included. Participants can expect to answer questions about their alcohol and medication use, their motivation to cut down, and their mental well-being. Blood samples will also be collected for testing. After a year, researchers will analyze the data to determine how effective the new support measures have been. This study aims to improve the health and well-being of individuals dealing with substance use issues in a hospital setting.
