ClinConnect Summary
This study is a prospective, observational effort designed to learn how emergencies requiring general surgery during pregnancy affect the baby and the course of labor. Researchers will observe women with non-pregnancy-related surgical problems (like appendicitis, gallbladder disease, biliary pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, or diverticulitis) and collect information from medical records about the pregnancy, the surgery or treatment chosen, and the baby’s outcome up to 30 days after delivery. No experimental treatments are given by the study; care decisions are made by the patient’s own doctors as part of standard medical practice. The goal is to identify best practices for managing these situations to protect both mother and fetus.
If you are eligible, you would be a pregnant woman 18 years or older with a non-obstetric acute general surgical issue who is treated at participating centers (trauma patients are not eligible). The study plans to enroll about 50 participants and follow them for up to 30 days after delivery. Participation involves using information from your medical records, and, if needed, a research team member may contact you by phone to gather information not in the medical record. The study is being conducted at the Methodist Dallas Medical Center in Dallas, Texas, led by Jennifer Burris, MD, and is sponsored by Methodist Health System.
