ClinConnect Summary
The AiCLOSE Study is a clinical trial designed to understand how airway closure affects patients who are receiving a special type of life-support called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during acute hypoxemic respiratory failure. This condition makes it hard for patients to get enough oxygen into their lungs. While ECMO can be lifesaving, we want to find out if patients on breathing machines also suffer from collapsed airways, and how this might influence their recovery time and chances of survival in the intensive care unit.
To participate in this study, patients must be experiencing severe breathing issues and have started ECMO treatment within the last 24 hours. However, individuals with certain conditions, like an air leak or those who are waiting for a lung transplant, will not be eligible to join. Participants in the study can expect to undergo tests to check for airway closure, which will help researchers learn how to improve care for future patients on ECMO.
