ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying the relationship between monitoring brain oxygen levels and the occurrence of postoperative delirium (POD) in patients undergoing a surgery called carotid endarterectomy (CEA). POD is a common complication, especially in older patients with certain health issues, and it can lead to serious problems after surgery. By using a device called Near-infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS), researchers will continuously check the oxygen saturation in the brain during the operation to see if changes in these levels can help predict if a patient will experience POD afterwards.
To be eligible for this trial, participants need to be scheduled for a carotid endarterectomy and must provide signed consent to join. However, individuals with severe cognitive impairment, a history of certain mental health medications, prior brain surgeries, or communication difficulties will not be included. If you participate, you can expect to have your brain's oxygen levels monitored during surgery, and the researchers will follow up with you after the procedure to gather more information. This study aims to better understand how brain oxygen levels relate to POD, ultimately helping to improve care for patients undergoing this surgery.
