ClinConnect Summary
The ACCESSIT Study is a clinical trial aimed at understanding how different muscles in the body that help with breathing work when patients are on mechanical ventilation after a spinal injury. This means the study is looking closely at how these muscles are structured, activated, and function while patients are receiving support to breathe, especially after trauma to the spine or spinal cord.
To be eligible for the study, participants need to be at least 16 years old and have a traumatic injury to their spine that requires invasive mechanical ventilation, which is a way of helping someone breathe using a tube. The study is currently recruiting participants of all genders. However, those who are expected to stop treatment within 24 hours, have chronic breathing problems that were treated before their injury, or have certain pre-existing muscle diseases will not be included. Participants can expect to have their breathing muscles monitored throughout the study, helping researchers learn more about respiratory support in these challenging situations.
