ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying how different levels of exercise and nutrition can help older patients who are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) recover from serious illnesses. The researchers want to find out if a more intensive approach to exercise and diet can help patients maintain or improve their strength and overall fitness while they are hospitalized. This is important because many patients lose muscle mass and strength during their hospital stay, which can lead to longer recovery times and a need for more help after they leave the hospital.

To participate in this study, patients should be between 65 and 74 years old, able to give consent, and must be admitted to the ICU for an acute internal illness, with a planned hospital stay of at least five days. They should also be able to move their lower limbs and take in food and fluids orally. Participants can expect to receive either standard or more intensive rehabilitation and nutrition support during their hospital stay, which aims to help them recover more quickly. It’s worth noting that some patients, such as those with severe chronic diseases or certain neuromuscular conditions, will not be eligible for this trial.
