ClinConnect Summary
The PedFluid Study is a clinical trial exploring how to better monitor fluid levels in children undergoing surgery. Currently, doctors often use a standard method called the 'Holliday and Segar' rule to determine how much fluid a child needs during surgery. However, this method may not be the best fit for today’s pediatric patients. The study aims to test a new tool called bio impedance monitoring, which measures how fluid moves in the body, to see if it provides more accurate information about a child’s fluid status during surgery.
To be part of this study, children aged between 30 days and 5 years old who are scheduled for elective surgery under general anesthesia may qualify. However, those who are critically ill, need sedation instead of general anesthesia, or cannot lie still for the measurements will not be eligible. Participants in the trial can expect to have a simple measurement taken using the bio impedance monitor, which will help researchers find out if this method is effective in tracking fluid changes during surgery. This study is currently recruiting, and parents will need to provide informed consent for their children to participate.
