ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is looking to improve safety for kids aged 9 to 12 who ride bicycles. Researchers want to find out if a special education program, which teaches safe biking practices, can help young riders become safer on the road. They will compare three groups: one group that gets the education program, another group that gets the same program plus extra training for parents on how to support their children’s biking safety, and a control group that won’t receive any education. To see how well these programs work, the researchers will use a new technology called Pedal Portal, which tracks biking habits and safety incidents with GPS and video.
To be eligible for the trial, participants must live in Johnson County, Iowa, have access to a bicycle, and ride it at least twice a week. They also need to be able to understand and speak English. Only one child per family can participate, and they should not have previously completed a formal bicycle safety program. Throughout the study, participants will learn important skills about safe biking, and parents will gain insights on how to help their kids practice those skills at home. If successful, the findings from this trial could lead to better biking safety programs for kids everywhere.
