Dual Use of ENDS and Combustible Cigarettes

This clinical trial is studying how young adults who use both combustible cigarettes (traditional cigarettes) and electronic nicotine delivery systems (like e-cigarettes) react to different cues related to smoking and vaping. Researchers want to understand the cravings and behaviors that come with using these products, both in a controlled lab setting and in everyday life. They will look at how things like seeing smoking-related images or being in certain situations can affect a person's desire to smoke or vape.

To participate, you need to be between 21 and 34 years old, speak English at an 8th-grade level, and have used both combustible cigarettes and e-cigarettes regularly in the past week. Participants will complete two lab sessions, where they will be exposed to different cues and report their cravings. After that, they'll use a smartphone app for 28 days to answer questions about their cravings and usage in real life. This study is important because it may help identify ways to support individuals who use both types of products, ultimately aiming to improve strategies for quitting smoking and vaping.

Eligibility criteria

• Inclusion Criteria:
• • Age 21 to 34 (inclusive)
• • English-speaking at an 8th grade level
• • Any self-reported past 7-day use of both ENDS and cigarettes
• • Self-identification as a regular ENDS and combustible cigarette user OR use of cigarettes and e-cigarettes on at least 6 of the past 7 days including at least 3 days of using each product;
• • Smoking status confirmed via breath CO \>= 6 ppm112 or NicAlert test of urine cotinine (level \>= 3)
• • Smartphone ownership.
• Exclusion Criteria:
• • Intention to quit smoking or vaping during the next 30 days
• • Intention to travel during next 30 days
• • Current alcohol dependence (based on MINI)
• • Urine-screened or past month illicit substance use other than marijuana (amphetamine, cocaine, methamphetamine, opioids, benzodiazepines
• • Pregnant (due to toxicity of tobacco products)
• • Current psychosis, mania, or suicidal ideation (based on MINI).
