ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial, titled "Functional Imaging of Baby Brains," is studying how to better predict the long-term effects of brain injuries in newborns caused by a lack of oxygen, a condition known as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Researchers want to see if a new imaging technique called diffuse optical tomography can provide helpful information alongside traditional MRI scans. The goal is to understand how severe the developmental challenges might be for these infants as they grow.
To participate in this study, babies must be admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Children's Hospital with a diagnosis of HIE. They should be at least 35 weeks old and weigh more than 1.8 kilograms at birth. Unfortunately, babies with certain other medical conditions or who need special breathing support will not be eligible. If your baby qualifies for the study, they will undergo non-invasive brain imaging to help researchers learn more about this serious condition. This research is important as it could lead to better care and support for infants affected by brain injuries.
