ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is examining the use of gastric ultrasound in patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to measure how much food or liquid is left in their stomachs. The goal is to see how effective different guidelines for not eating (known as NPO protocols) are in managing patients who are critically ill, have had surgery, or are dealing with aspiration pneumonia, a lung infection caused by inhaling food or liquid.
To participate in this study, individuals must be at least 18 years old and currently in the ICU, requiring anesthesia or sedation for a medical procedure. They should also have a special breathing tube in place for safety. However, people with certain conditions that affect the stomach, those who are pregnant, or those without the proper breathing tube will not be eligible. If you or a loved one is considering participation, the study will involve regular assessments using ultrasound to check stomach contents, helping doctors make better decisions about patient care.
