ClinConnect Summary
The Canadian Prehospital Syncope Risk Score (CPSRS) trial is studying a new tool designed to help paramedics identify patients who have fainted (a sudden loss of consciousness) but are at low risk for serious health problems afterward. Each year, many Canadians visit emergency departments for fainting, yet most don't require hospitalization. By using the CPSRS, paramedics hope to determine which patients can safely stay at home instead of going to the hospital, which would make better use of emergency resources.
To be part of this study, patients must be 18 years or older and have called 911 due to fainting. However, those with prolonged loss of consciousness, recent changes in their mental state, or those under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be included. Participants will be monitored for 30 days to see if they experience any serious health issues. The trial is not yet recruiting, but it aims to enroll about 4,875 patients over one year, which could ultimately lead to better care for patients and more efficient use of paramedic and hospital resources.
