ClinConnect Summary
The Ultracyt Study is researching a method to better identify which thyroid nodules, or lumps, should be tested for cancer using a procedure called fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). The study compares two approaches: one that uses a specific ultrasound system called EU-TIRADS to select nodules for testing, and another that tests nodules without this selection process. The main goal is to see if using EU-TIRADS results in finding more suspicious results, which could indicate cancer, compared to the other method. While both methods are expected to identify the same rate of actual cancers, the researchers believe the selective method may be more effective in spotting potential issues.
To participate in this study, individuals should be between the ages of 65 and 74 and have been referred for a thyroid ultrasound due to symptoms like a goiter or positive findings from another test. However, those who have had previous thyroid ultrasounds or surgeries are not eligible. Participants can expect to undergo an ultrasound followed by a decision about whether to perform the FNAC based on the study’s guidelines. This trial is currently recruiting patients and aims to improve how doctors evaluate thyroid nodules for cancer risk.
