ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is focused on finding better ways to support people who are in crisis due to suicidal thoughts. It aims to test a new follow-up program that provides help during and after a stay at a crisis stabilization center (CSC). These centers offer a more comfortable and less expensive option than going to an emergency room for people experiencing emotional crises. The goal is to see how effective this new follow-up approach is in helping individuals recover.

To participate in this trial, individuals must be between the ages of 18 and 74 and have been admitted to a CSC with active suicidal thoughts. They should also be able to provide contact information for someone who can be reached in case of an emergency. If someone is under 18, cannot speak English, is having severe psychiatric issues, or doesn't have access to a phone, they won’t be eligible for this study. Participants can expect regular follow-ups to check in on their well-being and receive support as they work through their recovery. This trial is currently recruiting participants, and it aims to improve how care is provided to those in crisis.

Eligibility criteria

  • Inclusion Criteria:
  • 1. Admission to CSC with suicidal crisis, as defined by active suicide ideation ascertained by the Columbia Suicide-Severity Rating scale, which the sites already routinely administer.
  • 2. Ability and willingness to provide information for and permission to contact one person in case of emergency or inability to reach the participant for follow-up
  • Exclusion Criteria:
  • 1. Under age 18.
  • 2. Inability to communicate with the researcher in English.
  • 3. Acute psychiatric instability (e.g., psychotic symptoms). Most patients with psychosis are transferred to Emergency Departments instead of CSCs, so we do not expect many exclusions based on this criterion.
  • 4. Inability to access a phone to participate in phone follow-up program.
