ClinConnect Summary
The clinical trial titled "Effect of Collaborative Requesting on DCD Refusal Rates" is studying how different ways of asking families for organ donation might affect their willingness to consent. In particular, the trial is looking at whether having a doctor and an organ procurement coordinator (a specialist in organ donation) ask together, called collaborative requesting, can lead to more families agreeing to organ donation compared to just the doctor asking on their own. This is important because many families refuse donation after a loved one has died, which can limit the availability of organs for those in need.
To participate in this trial, patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) must be at least 18 years old and have a decision made to stop life-sustaining treatments. Their family members, who must also be at least 18, need to agree to take part and have some understanding of spoken French. Throughout the trial, families can expect to have conversations about organ donation, and the researchers will compare the different asking methods to see which one leads to higher consent rates.
