ClinConnect Summary
This study tests how well a new mental health screening and referral program for children, used in rural Child Advocacy Centers (CACs), can be put into practice. All participating CACs will use the Care Process Model for Pediatric Traumatic Stress (CPM-PTS). The centers will be randomly assigned to two ways of implementing CPM-PTS: a team-focused approach that includes team-building and communication training, or the standard implementation with the usual training and support. The goal is to see if the team-focused approach is acceptable, appropriate, and feasible, and to explore how it might affect caregiver understanding of their child’s mental health needs and caregivers’ plans to seek treatment.
Eligible participants are adults (18 and older) who are members of the CACs’ multidisciplinary teams. If you are part of a CAC in this study, you may receive additional team-focused activities if your site is in the experimental group, or standard CPM-PTS training if your site is in the comparison group. Researchers will collect anonymous survey data from caregivers after CAC visits to measure caregivers’ understanding of their child’s mental health needs and their intention to pursue mental health services, as well as several implementation outcomes over time (baseline, 6 months, and 12 months). The study is conducted at four rural CACs led by the University of Pittsburgh, with results planned to inform future use of CPM-PTS and teamwork strategies. Data sharing of deidentified information is possible after main findings are published.
