ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is focused on improving how we administer Propofol, a medication used for anesthesia, specifically in older adults aged 65 and above. The researchers aim to develop a new model that uses brain activity measurements, taken from a type of test called an electroencephalogram (EEG), to better understand how Propofol works in the body. By comparing this new model to existing methods, they hope to enhance the way doctors can predict the effects of Propofol during surgery.
To participate in the study, individuals must be scheduled for a non-emergency surgery that requires general anesthesia and be in good health (classified as American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status I to III). Participants will fill out some questionnaires before the surgery, receive a continuous infusion of Propofol while being monitored with EEG and another type of brain activity measurement (called the bispectral index or BIS), and will be checked for signs of waking up from anesthesia. It’s important to note that certain individuals, including those with specific medical conditions or a history of substance abuse, will not be eligible for this study.
