**Clinical Trial Summary: Rest PETCO2 as a Predictor of Post-operative Complications**
This clinical trial is studying whether measuring the level of carbon dioxide in the breath (called PETCO2) at rest can help predict complications after major vascular surgery, such as aortobifemoral bypass surgery. Traditionally, doctors use a test called cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) to assess the risk of complications, but many older patients, who often have other health issues and may be frail, can't complete this test. The researchers believe that low levels of PETCO2 at rest might indicate a higher chance of developing problems with the lungs or heart after surgery.
To participate in this study, you need to be scheduled for major vascular surgery and be between the ages of 65 to 74. If you have a tracheostomy, which is a surgical opening in the neck to help with breathing, you won't be eligible. If you join the trial, you will have your PETCO2 measured before your surgery. The goal is to see if there is a difference in PETCO2 levels between patients who experience complications and those who do not. This research could help doctors better understand how to assess risks for patients who may not be able to complete standard testing.
