ClinConnect Summary
The CHAMPs trial is studying a new way to help older patients in the hospital keep their hands clean to prevent infections. The study uses a special hand hygiene system attached to the bed that reminds patients to wash their hands with easy-to-understand verbal and visual cues. By improving hand hygiene, the goal is to reduce the number of harmful germs that can cause infections in older adults.
To participate in this trial, you need to be at least 65 years old, be admitted to a medical-surgical unit for more than 24 hours, and be able to read and speak English. You will also need to have the physical ability to use the CHAMPs system and be able to see and hear well enough to understand the reminders. If you have certain medical conditions, like a terminal illness or severe cognitive impairments, you may not be eligible. If you join the study, you can expect to use the hand hygiene system during your hospital stay, which could help keep you healthier while you're being treated.
