ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial, called the Motivations, Attitudes, and Perceptions Study, is exploring how to encourage people to step in and help others who might be in risky situations related to alcohol use and sexual violence. The study will compare three different approaches: one that focuses solely on motivating bystanders to take action, another that combines this motivation with strategies to reduce drinking, and a control group that addresses stress reduction. The main goals are to see if the motivational strategies help more people intervene in risky situations and if adding the alcohol reduction component makes a difference in both intervening and reducing alcohol use.

Participants in this study will be individuals aged 18 to 25 who are heavy drinkers and live in or near Lancaster, Nebraska. If you join, you’ll complete some online surveys about your drinking habits and past experiences with intervening in difficult situations. Then, you'll participate in an online program tailored to one of the study groups, followed by a virtual reality simulation to practice these skills. Afterward, you’ll fill out daily electronic surveys to track your alcohol use and any interventions you take part in. This study is currently recruiting, and everyone’s participation can contribute valuable insights into improving safety and support in communities.
