ClinConnect Summary
The PUSH-IT clinical trial is studying how to provide nutrition to patients who need a tracheostomy, which is a procedure that helps people breathe when they have a breathing tube. The researchers want to know if continuing to give food right up until the surgery can help patients get more nutrition and if it affects the risk of food accidentally going into the lungs or causing lung infections. To find answers, they will compare two groups of patients: one group that stops eating 6 hours before surgery and another group that continues to receive nutrition until just before the procedure.
To be eligible for this trial, participants must be 18 years or older, currently in the intensive care unit (ICU), and need a tracheostomy because they are intubated (have a breathing tube). Patients will be closely monitored during the study, and their food intake and health will be tracked to see how the different feeding methods affect their recovery. This trial is open to all genders and is currently recruiting participants. If you or a loved one fits the criteria, this could be an important opportunity to help improve nutrition care for patients undergoing tracheostomy.
