ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial, called "POCUS for Gastric Emptying in Emergency Surgery," is studying how quickly food and liquids exit the stomach in adults who need emergency surgery for conditions like intestinal blockage or gallbladder inflammation. Normally, patients in this situation are treated as if they have a full stomach, which requires special procedures during anesthesia to prevent problems. However, this study uses ultrasound technology to take a closer look at what's actually in the stomach. By doing this, the researchers hope to find out how many patients truly have a full stomach and whether factors like how long they've been sick or medications they've taken affect this.
To participate in this trial, you must be an adult facing emergency surgery due to an acute abdominal issue. Unfortunately, those under 18 or unable to lie on their side for the ultrasound won't be able to join. If you’re eligible and choose to participate, you can expect a quick ultrasound exam to check your stomach content before surgery. The results could help improve safety during anesthesia and tailor treatments for patients in the future.
