ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is studying how the colonization of infusion tubing (the tubes used for delivering fluids and medications) affects the occurrence of infections related to central venous catheters (CVCs). CVCs are thin, flexible tubes inserted into large veins to help patients receive medication or fluids. The goal is to understand if bacteria growing on these tubes leads to more infections in patients using them. The study involves observing patients in a surgical intensive care unit who need a CVC for more than 48 hours and will not change their usual medical care.

To participate, you must be an adult over 18 years old and require a central venous catheter for treatment. During the study, researchers will take swabs from specific parts of the tubing at regular intervals, as well as when the catheter is removed, to check for bacteria. They will also look at various factors related to infections, how different types of tubing impact infection rates, and any costs associated with using these devices. This study aims to improve understanding of catheter-related infections and may help enhance patient safety and care in the future.
