ClinConnect Summary
This clinical trial is studying how to improve fitness before surgery for patients with certain types of cancer, such as stomach, liver, or lung cancer. This process, called prehabilitation, involves exercise to help patients become stronger and healthier before undergoing surgery. The trial aims to find out whether using a different walking test and monitoring heart rate during exercise can provide better information about a patient's fitness level compared to current methods.
To participate, individuals need to be between 18 and 80 years old, have a new diagnosis of non-spread cancer that requires surgery, and be able to speak and understand English. Participants will receive a Fitbit to track their activity and will have weekly phone check-ins to discuss their progress. They will be divided into two groups: one will exercise at a level they find "somewhat hard," while the other will focus on reaching a specific heart rate. The study lasts up to eight weeks, and during the final week, participants will share their experiences with the fitness tracker in an online questionnaire. This trial offers a chance to help improve how prehabilitation is conducted for future patients.
