ClinConnect Summary
The "Gerofit and Cognition" trial is studying how exercise can help improve thinking and memory in older Veterans, especially those 65 years and older who might have issues like PTSD or depression. Many older Veterans are at a higher risk for cognitive problems, but there hasn't been enough research on how physical activity can benefit their brain health. This trial aims to see if joining the VA Gerofit exercise program can enhance mental function and if certain blood and muscle tests can predict these improvements.
To participate, Veterans must be at least 65 years old and get approval from their primary care doctor to join the Gerofit program. However, those who struggle with daily activities, have serious cognitive issues, or cannot move independently may not qualify. If eligible, participants can expect to engage in exercise activities designed to boost both physical and mental health, potentially leading to a better quality of life. It's important to note that the trial also seeks to understand how different health factors can influence the benefits of exercise on thinking skills in older Veterans.
