ClinConnect Summary
The CASCADE Project is a clinical trial focused on improving the care of cancer patients who may experience serious health emergencies, specifically sepsis (a severe blood infection) and metastatic spinal cord compression (when cancer presses on the spinal cord). These conditions can be life-threatening, so the trial aims to see if providing healthcare staff with better training and a standardized tool called the Acute Oncology Passport can help them diagnose and treat these emergencies more effectively. Researchers will compare data on patient care for suspected sepsis and MSCC before and after staff training at five hospitals in the UK.
This trial is open to cancer patients who are currently being treated or have been treated recently, but it does not include patients under 18 years old. Participants won’t need to take any medication or undergo any procedures related to the study; instead, the focus is on analyzing existing hospital data to see if the training makes a difference in patient outcomes. This research is part of a larger effort funded by NHS England, and if successful, the training program could be implemented across the country to help improve care for all cancer patients facing these serious emergencies.
