ClinConnect Summary

This clinical trial is looking at a method called Noninvasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (NIPPV) to help newborns who need to be intubated, which is when a tube is placed in the airway to assist with breathing. The study is taking place at the University Hospital Zurich and aims to evaluate how well this method works in allowing doctors to successfully and safely intubate infants on the first try, without causing any breathing problems or instability. The researchers are also comparing their findings with a similar study conducted in Australia.

To be eligible for this trial, newborns in the neonatal unit or delivery room who need intubation can participate, as long as they don’t need immediate intubation due to a medical emergency and don’t have certain medical conditions that would prevent the use of NIPPV. Parents will need to give their consent for their baby to be part of the study. If the doctors feel that the trial might interfere with the baby's treatment, they can choose to withdraw the infant from the study. Families can expect to follow the usual intubation process, but with the added use of NIPPV to see if it improves the outcomes for their newborn.

Eligibility criteria

  • Inclusion Criteria:
  • Any neonate at the Department of Neonatology of the University Hospital Zurich undergoing endotracheal intubation in the delivery room or neonatal intensive care unit.
  • Exclusion Criteria:
  • Requirement for immediate endotracheal intubation as determined by the treating clinician, without time for potential application of NIPPV, e.g. active cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
  • Contraindication to NIPPV use (e.g. congenital diaphragmatic hernia, abdominal wall defects).
  • Oral intubation planned.
  • Denial of parental consent and/or inability of the parents to understand the study procedures due to cognitive or linguistic reasons.
  • Withdrawal at the discretion of the intubating clinician if he / she feels the study is interfering with a safe and optimal treatment of the patient.
